Turkish Delights at Kazan - SilverSpoon London

That how I’ve come to feel about the people I’ve met through blogging and why I was very much looking forward to a night spent with Emma, Aftab and Mina.

Not only are the people now old friends, but the restaurant kind of was too…Kazan, a Turkish restaurant in Victoria, is one of my regular haunts for a date night with Mr S. I was keeping our little spot a secret until now but it’s time to spill the beans about this fantastic place.

Talking of old friends, one of Mina’s best friends for years actually owns Kazan, which is another reason why it was the perfect venue for our blogger catch up.

That’s what I love about Turkish food, there’s always something for everyone and we loved the Ottoman inspired feast of tabbouleh, tarama, felafel, smoked salmon, prawns, borek and hellimi.

Aftab choose a typical Turkish favourite, baklava, a sweet pastry brimming with chopped pistachios with the sugary taste of honey syrup and a cooling accompaniment of rose ice cream.

Usually I don’t associate Turkish restaurants with cocktails, however, Kazan has an extensive list of concoctions (including virgin cocktails) at reasonable prices.

My friend was of similar mind so we split a Seafood Mezze Platter (£18.95), which included Smoked Salmon, Crispy Baby Calamari, Fish Kofte, Deep Fried Prawn, Baba Ganoush, Tabbouleh and Tarama.

The ganoush, tabbouleh and tarama balanced out the dish so it wasn’t too fishy, with the cold salmon a nice contrast to the hot calamari and prawn.

Our booth was incredibly comfortable and gave us a good view of the restaurant.

I really liked the mix of modern and Turkish influence to the interiors.

As one of London’s few upmarket Turkish restaurants, Kazan is perhaps trying too hard to justify its existence.

There are no doner kebabs in sight, and the flowers on tables, lavish furnishings, champagne cocktails and individual hand towels in toilets aren’t found at many other Turkish eateries – but the food is far from dainty or fussy.

As we discovered when our pan-fried calf’s liver hit our table, it’s served in vast portions.
